Magnolia Picks Up Big Star Documentary
Oliva Mori's ode to the beloved '70s rock band is slated for a theatrical release later this year.
Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban's Magnolia Pictures have acquired North American rights to Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, Drew DeNicola and Oliva Mori's documentary about the beloved '70s rock band Big Star.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia senior VP of acquisitions Dori Begley with Josh Braun of Submarine. Magnolia, which released the Bob Marley documentary Marley in the spring of 2012, plans a theatrical release later this year.

Mori and Danielle McCarthy produced the film, which DeNicola and Mori directed. John Fry, founder of Memphis' Ardent Studios, executive produced with Gill Holland and David Armillei.
The film premiered at last year's SXSW. During the 2010 festival, Big Star front man Alex Chilton died in New Orleans days before he was scheduled to appear with the band in Austin.

Founded in Memphis by the late Chris Bell, the original Big Star lineup also featured Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel. The band was together less than four years and had an influence on R.E.M., the Replacements, Elliot Smith, the Flaming Lips and others.
