Magnolia Picks Up Terrence Malick's 'To the Wonder'
The romantic drama, starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams, will be released in 2013.
Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to Terrence Malick’s new film To the Wonder and plans to release the romantic drama in 2013.
The film, starring Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem, bowed at the Venice International Film Festival, where it met with highly divided reactions, including some boos. It is produced by Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda, and exec produced by Glen Basner of FilmNation and Jason Krigsfeld and Joseph Krigsfeld of Brothers K Productions. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who collaborated on Malick with the Oscar-nominated The Tree of Life, also worked on the new film.
To The Wonder tells the story of Marina (Kurylenko) and Neil (Affleck), who meet in France and move to Oklahoma to start a life together, where problems soon arise. While Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Bardem), who is struggling with his vocation, Neil renews a relationship with a childhood sweetheart, Jane (McAdams).
“It is an honor and a dream come true to be working with Terrence Malick, one of our greatest living filmmakers,” Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said. “To the Wonder is a romantic, haunting and beautiful film that will be endlessly rewarding for movie lovers."
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia svp, acquisitions Dori Begley and CAA, which repped the filmmakers. Distribution legal for the filmmakers was provided by Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.
