Makeup Monday: The Glam App Founders on Spring's Best Beauty Trends
Celeb makeup artist Joey Maalouf and actress Cara Santana dish on how to melt-proof your beauty routine and the hottest makeup trends for the warm-weather season.
With weekend one of Coachella (aka the unofficial start of summer style) underway, warm-weather fashion and beauty trends have begun to emerge.
No one knows the beauty portion of this better than celeb hair and makeup go-to, Joey Maalouf (main man to Rachel Zoe and Molly Sims) and actress Cara Santana. The duo recently launched their beauty-on-demand service, The Glam App, which brings services ranging from a nail polish color change to full hair and makeup directly to your doorstep.
To get in the spirit of the season, the pair also hosted a pre-festival event called Glamchella for 60 of L.A.’s coolest and most stylish, including Ashley Greene and Jamie Chung, who were treated to beauty services and stackable jewelry from Wanderlust + Co.
As spring and festival season moves along, Maalouf and Santana say that boho braids are a popular request on their app and smoldering, colored cat-eye make up may be the big beauty trend we’re bound to see everywhere.
We chatted with The Glam App founders to get their advice on beating the heat beautifully this festival season and whether certain beauty trends will see their way into the summer or just blend away gracefully.
What do you suggest as the best hairstyle for beating the heat (and dust!) during Coachella and throughout the summer?
Joey Maalouf: It may seem easy to just leave your hair down but the heat of the desert will have you sweating in seconds, and the last thing you want to think about at Coachella is your hair. Braids of any kind are always a good idea! Also, in any sunny situation you want to make sure not to over product your hair as it will only melt in the sun or turn sticky when sweat gets involved. Apply your products when your hair is damp to get effortless texture.
What are a few makeup tricks and products people can turn to in order to avoid looking cakey or runny while dancing through the desert?
Maalouf: Waterproof mascara and long-lasting eye shadow chubbies will keep you covered while you get your dance on! Don't over powder; it doesn't look attractive in direct sunlight. Use a tinted moisturizer and cream blush so you look fresh and dewy all day and night.

What are some of the most popular services or styles people are requesting via the Glam App this spring?
Cara Santana: The major request I’m seeing for the Glam App is hair braids. Maybe it's Coachella, maybe it's the heat, but people are really excited to stylize their hair; whether it's a braid in the crown, a half braid, full braid, or pieces throughout, there is a desire for that extra detail. I think the detail is fun and adds extra pizzazz to the beachy wave or stick-straight hair. It’s fun, youthful and carefree.
Do you see any emerging beauty trends that we should be watching out for through spring and summer?
Maalouf: Colored glitter hair gel and smoldering colored cat eyes.
