Marrakech Film Festival Winners Announced

"Out of Bounds" wins the fest's top prize, while the Jessica Chastain-led jury awards Australian film "Snowtown."
Danish director Frederikke Aspock’s film Out of Bounds was thrown into the spotlight when the 11th annual Marrakech International Film Festival wrapped on Saturday night in the Moroccan city, winning the fest's grand prize.
The island drama from Nordisk productions follows a young couple and the relationship between a father, his daughter and his daughter’s boyfriend.
Emir Kusturica and his star-heavy panel of judges gave their jury prize to Justin Kurzel’s Australian film Snowtown. That film’s star Daniel Henshall was named best actor for his role as a notorious serial killer who befriends a teenage boy.
Joslyn Jensen didn’t leave the ceremony without the best actress award for her breakout performance in Mark Jackson’s Without.
The jury prize for best director went to Italian directing duo Gialuca and Massimiliano De Serio for Seven Acts of Mercy.
This year’s jury featuring Jessica Chastain, Nicole Garcia, Leïla Hatami, Abdelkader Lagtâa, Brillante Ma. Mendoza, Radu Mihaileanu, Maya Sansa and Aparna Sen chose from 15 titles in competition.
The festival ended after a star-powered nine-day run that featured appearances from Indian film star Shah Rukh Khan and Forest Whitaker, masterclasses from Terry Gilliam, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Marco Bellocchio, Jean-Jacques Annaud and Roland Joffe plus a long visit from short film jury president Sigourney Weaver and a tribute to Mexican cinema.
