'Martha Marcy' Filmmakers Sign First-Look Deal with Fox Searchlight
Borderline Films is made up of Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh Mond.
Borderline Films, the creative team behind the indie hit Martha Marcy May Marlene, has signed a two-year first look deal with Fox Searchlight.
The deal strengthens the bond between the filmmakers and Searchlight, which picked up MMMM at Sundance and is releasing it now in theatres.
Borderline is comprised of Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh Mond. Durkin wrote the script for MMMM and made his directorial debut on the drama. Campos and Mond acted as producers along with Patrick Cunningham and Chris Maybach. MMMM, starring Elizabeth Olsen, won the dramatic feature directing award at Sundance and went on to unspool at the Festival de Cannes, Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival among others. Olsen has generated some Oscar buzz for her breakout performance.
The principals call Searchlight “an ideal home” and say the move takes their company to a new level.
The latter is certainly true, as it will give the company—created in 2003 and having produced several acclaimed shorts, music videos and features—a kind of stability almost impossible for indie filmmakers to find.
The deal also should serve to calm one of the biggest worries that indie filmmaker have—wondering what its next distribution outlet will be.
