'The Martian' Trailer: Matt Damon Tries to Survive on Mars, Return to Earth
Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star in the Ridley Scott space epic.
The first trailer for Ridley Scott's star-studded space epic The Martian has landed.
In the preview, a crew consisting of Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara and others venture to the red planet. But when they get there, they're caught in a storm and, as Jeff Daniels' character explains at a press conference, Damon's character, astronaut Mark Watney dies.
But it turns out he's not dead, as Watney's shown waking up in his spacesuit on the planet's surface. He records a video message explaining his predicament and prepares to figure out how to survive on Mars for the next four years. Although Watney says he can't get in touch with NASA or his crew, somehow his message makes it to them and they prepare another mission to bring him home.
The launch of the trailer comes a day after a three-minute promo clip for the film hit YouTube. In that video, Watney gives viewers a tour of the Hermes spaceship before it travels to Mars, introducing Chastain and Mara's characters and other members of the crew.
The Fox film is based on the book by Andy Weir, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard. The star-studded cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan and Donald Glover.
The Martian is set to hit theaters on Nov. 25
