Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison Doc, Frederick Wiseman’s 'Crazy Horse' to Run in San Sebastian

MADRID – Martin Scorsese’s bio-documentary of George Harrison, JuanCarlos Rulfo’s Carriere: 250 Meters and Frederick Wiseman’s Crazy Horse are three of the documentaries that will run in the 59th San Sebastian International Film Festival’s Zabaltegi-Specials section, organizers announced Tuesday.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World is Scorsese’s latest documentary which looks at the former Beatle through the testimonies of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Phil Specter, among others. Wiseman turns his veteran gaze on the famous Parisian cabaret “Crazy Horse,” while Rulfo takes a deeper look at author and screenwriterJean-Claude Carriere, Luis Bunuel’s faithful collaborator and author of 100 movie screenplays and recently decorated with the Spanish Order of the Arts and Letters.

Organizers announced 11 titles as part of the special screenings sidebar, including Leila Kilani’s Cinema in Motion winner and Directors’ Fortnight title On the Edge, Antoine Deslevaux and illustrator Joann Sfar’s animated The Rabbi’s Cat and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s poetic examination of loss and mourning in The Days After.

The Spanish-French thriller The Monk, directed by Dominik Moll about a monk who makes a pact with the devil and Justi n Kurzel’s disturbing story about an adolescent and a mysterious character who draws him into a world of violence and horror in Snowtown will unspool in special Midnight Screening sessions. Japanese erotic cinema will be featured in a Pinka Eiga Night, screening a selection of the genre’s most-known titles for movie buffs at a midnight showing.

The San Sebastian International Film Festival runs from Sept. 16-24 in Spain’s northern Basque region.
