The new footage includes Joaquin Phoenix’s character -- a World War II veteran -- discussing love with Philip Seymour Hoffman's Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic man (and possible cult leader) who bears a resemblance to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

“When we’re in love, we experience pleasure and extreme pain,” Dodd says.

Amy Adams, who stars as Dodd’s wife, gives Phoenix’s character some cult-like advice about “time holes," which she describes as “going back to a place and realizing you’re on the wrong track, and getting to start life over, from the ground floor.”

The Weinstein Co. film opens domestically Sept. 14, but first will head to the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. And as plugged at the end of the new trailer, Chicago moviegoers will have the opportunity to see the film Thursday night, at a one-time screening benefiting Martin Scorsese's film preservation nonprofit, the Film Foundation.
