'The Master' Trailer: Philip Seymour Hoffman Manipulates Joaquin Phoenix (Video)
The Weinstein Company's post-war drama is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and also stars Amy Adams.
From the looks of his new trailer, Paul Thomas Anderson has mastered yet another project.
In his first outing since 2007’s There Will Be Blood, the director is tackling The Master, a post-war drama starring Joaquin Phoenix as a World War II vet and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the transfixing leader of a new religion.

It's easy to see how Lancaster Dodd's (Hoffman) gravitas would captivate the lost Freddie Quell (Phoenix). After all, Dodd is a man of many accomplishments.
“I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher, but above all, I am a man. Just like you,” Hoffman says in the trailer.
There has been speculation the fictional religion in the Weinstein Company film draws inspiration from Scientology, though Hoffman has denied this claim. Regardless of its inspiration, the film’s religion appears to border on being a cult.
Also starring Amy Adams, The Master is being released Oct. 12.
