Mel Brooks to Receive BAFTA Fellowship
BAFTA's highest honor will be awarded to the comedy legend at the upcoming film awards.
Legendary funnyman Mel Brooks is set to receive the BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy's highest honor.
The director of films including Blazing Saddles and The Producers will be presented with the fellowship at the upcoming BAFTA awards ceremony on Feb. 12.
"I am not overwhelmed, but I am definitely whelmed by this singular honor," said Brooks. "To be included among such iconic talents is absolutely humbling. In choosing me for the 2017 Fellowship I think that BAFTA has made a strangely surprising yet ultimately wise decision."
Brooks joins a list of BAFTA Fellowship honorees including Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick. Last year, Sidney Poitier was the recipient.
"Mel Brooks is a truly unique and multi-talented filmmaker," said BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry. "We are absolutely thrilled to award him the fellowship, the highest honor of the evening, at this year’s British Academy Film Awards."
