Melania Trump Has a New Hashtag
But what does it mean?
Melania Trump has been slow to step into the first lady spotlight since her husband, Donald Trump, took over the Oval Office. But her increased social media presence in recent days, attached to a cryptic — some might say feminist — hashtag might offer a glimpse of what's to come for the mother and former model.
Unlike her Twitter-obsessed husband, the first lady, using the handle @FLOTUS, has tweeted only seven times since the Trump administration took power. And three of those tweets to her nearly 7 million followers have been embedded with the now-trending hashtag #powerofthefirstlady.
The unexplained slogan first surfaced on Feb. 11, when Melania posted a photo of herself with Akie Abe, the wife of visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and referenced their joint responsibility to the next generation. (A hashtag, #powerofeverychild, was also attached to this one but has yet to gain traction.)
Two days later, she used the catchphrase again in praise of model and actor Emily Ratajkowski, who took to her own social media platform to speak up against "slut-shaming" and to come to the defense of the first lady after a New York Times reporter was heard saying, "Melania Trump is a hooker." (The reporter has since publicly apologized.)
"Applause to all women around the world who speak up, stand up and support other women! @emrata #PowerofEveryWoman #PoweroftheFirstLady," the first lady wrote.
On Wednesday, it resurfaced for a third time, alongside a photo of Melania with Sara Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife.
But what, exactly, does the catchphrase mean?
On the campaign trail, Melania stated that she would be committed to tackling cyber-bullying as first lady. So far, it appears she has yet to make good on that pledge.
Indeed, the power of the first lady is great and far-reaching, as shown most recently by former first lady Michelle Obama, who actively used her stature and influence on social media and beyond to effect change. How Melania intends to put her own power to use is still unknown, but the world — and Twitter — is watching.
