Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone Teaming Up for New Comedy 'Life of the Party' (Exclusive)
New Line just picked up the project, which would star McCarthy and be directed by Falcone.
As they launch their latest comedy, Universal’s The Boss, Melissa McCarthy and her husband and frequent collaborator, Ben Falcone, are teaming up for another comedy.
New Line has picked up Life of the Party, which McCarthy will star in and Falcone will direct. But wait, there’s more: The duo also wrote the script and, on top of that, will produce the project, which ideally would shoot in August.
The film reteams McCarthy and Falcone with New Line after the surprise hit Tammy, the 2014 comedy that grossed over $100 million worldwide — five times its $19 million budget. New Line is hoping to keep Party in a similar budgetary zone.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film has been described as being akin in tone to the Rodney Dangerfield hit Back to School and pitched as a broad comedy playing on McCarthy's strengths.
In many ways, McCarthy’s star has never been higher, and neither has her negotiating power, with all her comedies since Bridesmaids proving huge moneymakers. Boss, which Falcone directed and co-wrote, is giving Batman v. Superman a run for its money this weekend and is projected to gross in the low $20s, with a budget of $29 million. McCarthy next stars in this summer’s much-hyped Ghostbusters reboot.
McCarthy and Falcone are repped by CAA and MGMT Entertainment.
