Metrodome brings 'Lear' to U.K., Ireland, Oz

Ian McKellen starrer was directed by Trevor Nunn

LONDON -- U.K. indie Metrodome Distribution is brushing up on its Shakespeare, taking U.K., Irish, Australian and New Zealand ancillary rights to Trevor Nunn's stage-to-screen adaptation of "King Lear," starring Ian McKellen.

The deal was hammered out among Metrodome's Peter Urie, Sara Frain and Kate Edwards and Richard Price and Nigel Whitehouse for RPTA Ltd.

Metrodome negotiated the multiterritory deal in order to work closely with Rialto Distribution, who will be releasing the film in Australia and New Zealand.

Recorded in high-definition at Pinewood Studios after a sellout West End run at the New London Theatre, "Lear" is directed by Nunn and Chris Hunt.

King Lear will be released on DVD by Metrodome in the U.K. in October, then on Blu-ray in December. Channel 4 is planning to air the production on Christmas Day here. It will be released in Australia and New Zealand in early 2009.
