Metropole acquires two Cannes films

'Of Gods and Men,' 'Certified Copy' picked up

TORONTO – Quebec distributor Metropole Films has picked up the French Canadian rights to Xavier Beauvois's "Des Hommes et des Dieux" (Of Gods and Men) from Wild Bunch after the film grabbed Grand Prix award at Cannes on Sunday.

Sony Pictures Classics earlier picked up the U.S. and Australia/New Zealand rights to Beauvois' Algerian drama about eight French Christian monks trying to get along with their Muslim neighbors.

More Cannes coverage
Montreal-based Metropole also acquired the Quebec rights to Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami's film "Copie Conforme" (Certified Copy) from MK2.

Kiarostami's Tuscany-set romantic comedy earned Juliette Binoche the best actress prize in Cannes.

Metropole Films offered no theatrical release dates for the Cannes award-winning films.
