Nine months into the year, Fox Mexico is within striking distance of Paramount's single-year record of $154 million

It's been a sluggish year at the Mexican box office, but curiously 20th Century Fox Mexico is set to break an industry record for the highest annual gross ever.

Mexico ranks as the 10th largest international box-office market, but much like in the U.S., it has seen a slowdown this summer due to underperforming Hollywood tentpoles. The World Cup also took its toll on cinema admissions in soccer-mad Mexico.

Nevertheless, nine months into the year, Fox Mexico is within striking distance of Paramount's single-year record of $154 million.

So far, Fox Mexico has raked in north of $150 million and it's likely to finish the year strong with upcoming Hollywood releases featuring Mexican talent, including Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman and the Guillermo del Toro-produced toon Book of Life.

Disney's Maleficent earned $45 million in Mexico, making it the year's top performer, followed by Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction. Yet Fox has emerged supreme with four of the year's top-10 releases in Mexico, including Rio 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Days of Future Past and How to Train Your Dragon 2.
