Michael Shannon Joins Broadway's 'Long Day's Journey Into Night'
Jessica Lange, Gabriel Byrne and John Gallagher Jr. also make up the Tyrone family in Jonathan Kent's upcoming revival of the Eugene O'Neill play.
Michael Shannon's next role? James Tyrone, Jr.
The seasoned actor and Boardwalk Empire alum will make his Broadway return in Long Day's Journey Into Night, Roundabout Theatre Company announced on Wednesday.
He joins Jessica Lange, who will reprise her role as Mary Tyrone, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award in the West End in 2000. Gabriel Byrne will play James Tyrone, and John Gallagher Jr. will play Edmond Tyrone.
Jonathan Kent is directing the revival of the Eugene O'Neill play, which counts Ryan Murphy as part of its creative team. The production, as part of Roundabout Theatre Company's 50th anniversary season, begins previews on March 31 before opening on April 19. It will run at the American Airlines Theatre through June 26.
The last Broadway revival of O'Neill's 1956 play — the story of the Tyrone family and their battle to unearth and conceal a lifetime of secrets, and drawing heavily on the playwright's personal history — was a starry production in 2003, starring Brian Dennehy, Vanessa Redgrave, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robert Sean Leonard and directed by Robert Falls.
Shannon returns to Broadway after making his debut in 2012 in Grace, the comedic play that also starred Paul Rudd, Ed Asner and Kate Arrington and was directed by Dexter Bullard.
