Mike Beale appointed at NBCU
Named vp international television productionLONDON -- Less than a month after Denise O'Donoghue quit as NBC Universal president of international television production, NBCU International president Pete Smith has wooed Alchemy and 12 Yard Productions exec Mike Beale to be NBCU vp international television production, with a brief to build the scripted and non-scripted businesses internationally.
Reporting to Smith, Beale will be responsible for developing international production strategy and building the business through corporate acquisition, organic growth and international format development. He will work alongside Yvonne Pilkington (vp, international format sales) and tap scripted and non-scripted format opportunities and build on the acquisition of Carnival Films in 2008.
A president of international television production is still to be announced, but NBC said Beale's appointment "will contribute to NBC Universal's ongoing international growth through increased local production, geographical expansion and new business creation."
Beale previously headed up the reality division of Alchemy Television where he produced shows such as "Scene Stealers" for BBC2 and "Mon Incroyable Fiance" for TF1 before leaving in July 2009.
Prior to Alchemy, Mike was deputy managing director of 12 Yard Productions, which was acquired by ITV in 2007 and oversaw the international roll-out of such formats as "The Weakest Link" and "Dog Eat Dog" when he was at the BBC.
"It is exciting to welcome Mike to the team at a crucial time for this growing division," said Smith.
"His breadth of international production experience underlines his deep knowledge of the market and of the best creative talent out there."
