Days after McCready and her young child Zander were found by police in Arkansas after fleeing Florida earlier this month, Billy McKnight -- founder of country group Soul Circus Cowboys -- said in an interview he wasn't surprised by the country singer's actions at all.

"I don't put things past Mindy," McKnight said to People. "Since I've known her, she often does things that I can't explain."

McKnight said that he was worried about the child's physical and mental health. 

"He was hiding in a closet with his mother, with her telling him to be quiet," he said. "Then people come to the closet door and take him away from her. That's a nightmare. No child should go through that."

McCready, who has had her share of legal and personal struggles, is being accused of taking Zander away from her mother Gayle Inge, who has been the child's legal guardian since 2007. The singer's story began more than one month ago when she and her son were reported missing by the Department of Children and Families after McCready, who has visitation rights, took him away during a recent visit.

The 36-year-old then stated that she would not return her son because she was pregnant and therefore could not travel. 

McKnight has also had his share of issues, which include substance abuse and being charged in 2005 after a fight with McCready. But the 45-year-old says that he has been sober for three years.

"I have gotten myself together," he said. "I'm not a monster. I know people have said things about me, but I am not crazy; Mindy's not crazy. We're two normal people who are just a little left of center."

McKnight has unsupervised visitation rights for four days a week and prior to McCready leaving Florida, she had supervised visitation.

"Every child deserves a mother," said McKnight. "Mindy loves him and he loves her. I would never want to take that away from either of them. But she needs to be well; she needs to have a healthy relationship with him."  

McKnight hopes to have full custody by next year. It is unclear whether McCready could face charges.
