The new season of the series, which airs on Netflix in the U.S., will star Daniel Sharman, Bradley James and Sean Bean.

German production heavyweight Beta Film has signed up to co-produce the second season of European period drama Medici: Masters of Florence, taking over from French outfit Wild Bunch.

The series, which airs on Netflix in the U.S., is a production of Italy's Lux Vide in cooperation with Rai Fiction and Big Light Productions, the European outfit run by The Man in the High Castle creator Frank Spotnitz. European telecommunications company Altice Group has also signed on to produce the show's second season, which will be titled: Medici: Masters of Florence. The Magnificent.

Set in 15th century Florence, the series follows the drama of the infamous Medici family, whose political and economic scheming helped shape European and world history. Season two focuses on Lorenzo de' Medici (Daniel Sharman of Teen Wolf and Fear the Walking Dead), a young son forced to take over the family business following an attempt on the life of his father, Piero de Medici. Lorenzo wants to abandons the cynical politics of the past and usher in a new era of political freedom and creative expression but his attempt puts him on a collision course with the head of Florence’s other powerful banking family, Jacopo Pazzi, played by Game of Thrones star Sean Bean. Bradley James (Damien, Merlin) co-stars as Lorenzo's brother, Giuliano. Sarah Parish (Pillars of the Earth), Alessandra Mastronardi (Master of None), Synnove Karlsen (Clique), Raoul Bova (The Tourist) and Julian Sands (Gotham) also star.

Jon Cassar (24: Live Another Day) will direct the second season, together with Italy's Jan Michelini, helmer of hit Italian series Un passo dal cielo.

Beta, who will also be handling world sales for the show, will present the first images of the second season to buyers at Mipcom on Monday, Oct. 16.

Medici is currently shooting on location in Tuscany and in studios in Rome, with principal photography expected to wrap by December. Luca Bernabei, Frank Spotnitz, Matilde Bernabei, Jon Cassar, Emily Feller, Daniele Passani and Nora Melhli are executive producing.
