MIPCOM to Open With Heist Drama 'The Last Panthers'
The CanalPlus and Sky Atlantic limited series starring John Hurt and Samantha Morton will open the TV confab in Cannes.
The Last Panthers will get its first screening at MIPCOM, opening the television confab with a world premiere.
Oscar nominees John Hurt and Samantha Morton, as well as Cesar winner Tahar Rahim, will be on hand for a Q&A for the premiere event.
A co-production from France’s CanalPlus and the U.K.’s Sky Atlantic, the six-part limited series tells the story of the infamous Pink Panthers gang, the jewelry thieves responsible for headline-grabbing heists around the globe.
The script is based on an idea from journalist Jerome Pierrat, is written by Skins scribe Jack Thorne and directed by Johan Renck (Bloodline). Based on real events, the series starts with a heist and follows the jewelry as it moves around “the new Europe” with ties to organized crime, high finance and government officials.
“The Last Panthers is emblematic of this new breed of event series that are internationally co-produced, set in different countries, and feature A-list talent, and which have proved to be a great success on the international marketplace,” said Laurine Garaude, director of conference organizer Reed MIDEM’s TV division.
The series is the second co-production for CanalPlus and Sky Atlantic, who previously worked on The Tunnel, the French-British adaptation of hit Danish series The Bridge.
StudioCanal and Sky Vision are handling worldwide distribution. France’s Haut et Court TV (The Returned) and Warp Films (Southcliffe) produced.
MIPCOM runs Oct. 5 – 8 in Cannes.
