MIPCOM: Sony Gets Arab Backing for 'The Winner Is…'
Channels in Egypt, Dubai and Lebanon commission an Arab version of the entertainment format developed by “The Voice” producer Talpa.
CANNES - Sony Pictures Television Arabia has inked deals with broadcasters in Egypt, Lebanon and Dubai for an Arab version of The Winner Is…, an entertainment format developed by The Voice producer Talpa.
Egyptian channel Al Hayat, the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International and pan-regional satellite channel Dubai TV have all commissioned the show. SPT Arabia, which represents Talpa formats in the region, will produce a 14-episode first season of The Winner Is..., including two live episodes, which will go out on all three broadcasters.
The Winner Is...see contestants competing in singing competitions - in front of a celebrity singer and a panel of 100 music experts - to win cash prizes. The show goes through a series of rounds, with the prize increasing each time until the big finale.
SPT Arabia produced The Voice Arabia which debuted last year and attracted some 100 million viewers a week for pan-regional broadcaster MBC. A second season is currently in production. The group has also had success with local versions of has also made successful local versions of formats such as Jeopardy! and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and is developing an Arabic take on telenovella Betty La Fea, adapted as Ugly Betty in the U.S..
