MIPCOM: Telemundo Unveils Star for Upcoming 'Les Miz'
Mexico’s Aracely Arambula will head the cast of the Spanish adaptation.
Telemundo Internacional said Monday that Mexican actress Aracely Arambula will play the leading role in its upcoming telenovela based on Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. The Venezuelan screenwriter Valentina Parraga – the writer for Telemundo's La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South) and La Patrona (The Return) -- heads the adaptation by Telemundo Studios.
Arambula played the leading role in La Patrona -- a story that mirrors another French novel, The Count of Monte Cristo.
This production of Les Miz marks the first Spanish-language telenovela based on the epic French drama. The Telemundo adaptation contemporizes Hugo’s classic, but still highlights social injustice as well as the struggle between good and evil.
"We are very proud of this project, which is another brilliant production that will carry our brand, and we anticipate it will have excellent results," said Telemundo Internacional president Marcos Santana in Cannes.
"This Les Miserables will be filmed entirely in Mexico – a country which will provide scenery for this story that cannot be found anywhere else," added Joshua Mintz, executive vp fiction and general manager of Telemundo Studios.
Arambula was a guest at the press conference, speaking about the challenge she is taking on with Les Miserables.
