A&E, Astro team for branded channels

CANNES — A&E Television Networks and Malaysia's monopoly satellite TV platform Astro All Asia Networks have signed a joint venture to launch and operate branded channels and services across Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the companies said Monday. The first two channels to roll out under the AETN All Asia Networks joint venture will be the History Channel and Crime & Investigation Network. The Biography Channel will follow. In addition to traditional pay TV platforms, the brands and programming will be distributed via VOD, mobile, broadband and HD, according to Sean Cohan, senior vp international at AETN.



New strategy for Shanghai Media Group

CANNES — China's Shanghai Media Group said Monday that it has launched a user-generated content strategy with three shows on three of its youth-focused cable channels. The shows on lifestyle service Channel Young, music channel In Star TV and SiTV Game Channel are offered as part of a deal for Auditions TV interactive software with Los Angeles-based media company Fix8. One of the programs, the midnight talk show "Stay With You Till Dawn," has been running in test mode since year's end, Fix8 CEO Linh Tang said.



BVITV deals for 'Mickey Mouse,' 'Grey's'

CANNES — Buena Vista International Television signed a slew of deals here Monday. The studio announced its debut Hong Kong-based VOD deal with Hong IPTV and VOD base operator ViDeOnline as well as deals for kids that launch "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" in more than 80 international territories on free TV. BVITV said it also has licensed further series of "Grey's Anatomy" to the Five channel in the U.K. BVITV's first Hong Kong-based VOD agreement will see library features from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films available for users to rent on-demand via ViDeOnline's O8Media Internet platform, which launches this month in Hong Kong.
