MIPTV to Focus on German TV at 2016 Event
With series like 'Deutschland 83' and 'Generation War,' German TV is starting to get noticed internationally.
International television market MIPTV will shift its focus to Germany for its upcoming event, which runs April 4-7 in Cannes.
Germany is, by some estimates, the world's second-largest television market, with 40 million households and revenues in 2015 of $2.84 billion (€2.6 billion).
But it is only recently that German series have started to generate the kind of buzz outside the country seen with Scandinavian crime thriller or British period dramas. Award-winning series such as Generation War and Deutschland '83 have raised the the global profile of German small screen talent.
The MIPTV event will bring together the major players on the German TV scene, with production and distribution groups Red Arrow International and ZDF Enterprises lead partners for a series of special conference sessions on international and co-productions of both scripted and non-scripted programming.
Beta Film, one of the German pioneers of international co-productions, whose credits include Borgia, Generation War and the upcoming 1920s crime series Babylon Berlin, will host an international screening at MIP on April 4.
Some of the other companies set to attend include public networks WDR and Deutsche Welle, subsidy and promotion group German Films and kids TV production house Your Family Entertainment.
