MIPTV: FremantleMedia, 'Deal or No Deal' Creator Sign Development Deal
FremantleMedia has signed an exclusive two-year co-development deal with Dutch game show master Dick De Rijk, creator of Deal or No Deal.
The agreement, which Fremantle announced at MIPTV on Tuesday, will see De Rijk develop reality and game show formats for the world market, which Fremantle will produce and distribute through its international network.
In addition to global hit Deal or No Deal, De Rijk has developed successful formats such as Set for Life, Show Me the Money and You Deserve It.
He previously had similar development deals in place with Endemol and, most recently, German group Red Arrow International.
The FremantleMedia deal comes as the game show, long banned from primetime in many major markets, appears to be making a comeback.
Fox yesterday announced an order for Boom! -- based on an Israeli format from Keshet International -- the first new primetime game show on one of the big four networks since NBC's failed attempt with Million Second Quiz.
One of the appealing aspects of the game show format is its inherent interactivity, a must-have for broadcasters worldwide trying to push into the second screen space.
“It's ironic, because game shows are the oldest TV genre, but they are by their nature the most interactive,” says Rob Clark, director of global entertainment development at Fremantle. De Rijk notes that the revenue from second screen applications for Deal or No Deal -- including online and mobile games -- made the license fees for the global hit “look like a dinner tip in comparison.”
