The 23-year-old tap danced her way to victory, beating several contestants with moving backstories.
Brooklyn can claim Miss America as one of its own tonight.
Mallory Hagan, 23, tapped danced her way to the crown in Los Vegas Saturday, performing to James Brown's "Get Up Off of That Thing,” the Associated Press reports.
Miss New York beat out Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers, who was runner-up, and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who came in third.
Hagan will wear the crown for one year. She will also receive a $50,000 scholarship, and is expected to embark on a national speaking tour to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network, which is the official charity of the organization.
During the competition, Hagan answered a question about posting armed guards in schools by saying we should not be combating violence with violence.
A number of pageant’s contestants have headline-grabbing life stories, including Miss Iowa, who has Tourette's syndrome, Miss Montana, who is autistic, and Miss District of Columbia, who lost her mother and grandmother to breast cancer and plans on having a double mastectomy.
The Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino hosted the 92nd Miss America annual show. The contest was broadcast on ABC, which preceded the pageant with an hour-long 20/20 special devoted to it.
