Miss Colombia Talks "Humiliating" Miss Universe Mix-Up, Why She Agrees With Trump
"It was very humiliating for me, but also for the whole country," says Ariadna Gutierrez in a new interview.
After being accidentally crowned Miss Universe by Steve Harvey earlier this month, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez discussed her reaction to Harvey's mishap with Colombia's W radio on Wednesday.
According to the Latin Times, Gutierrez said in the interview, "It was very humiliating for me, but also for the whole country and for all the people not only from Colombia but the other Latinos that were in the auditorium." Although the incident was embarrassing for Gutierrez, she sent well wishes to Miss Philippines in an Instagram post after the show.
During the Fox telecast, Harvey incorrectly named Gutierrez as Miss Universe and shortly after expressed that he had misread the card that had listed Miss Philippines as the winner and Gutierrez as the first runner-up. Gutierrez expressed in the interview that her reaction to the mishap was, "this was going to be a joke," since Harvey had a habit of joking around during rehearsals.
The clip of the gaffe, which Harvey called an honest mistake, ended up going viral and gaining millions of views on YouTube and other sites, with the telecast averaging 6.2 million viewers. The situation left viewers guessing if the incident was simply an accident or a ploy for ratings.
"If that was the goal, they succeeded," said Gutierrez.
Donald Trump, who lost the telecast to WME | IMG in September, has since tweeted that Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines should have been co-winners.
"For the first time, I agree with him," said Gutierrez in response to Trump's tweet.
Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant. I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 21, 2015
