DOLBY LIKES SOUND OF Q2

Dolby Laboratories posted a 45% rise in fiscal second-quarter profit to $56.8 million on a 34% rise in revenue to $172.6 million. The company also boosted its guidance, sending shares as much as 11% higher in after-hours trading after having risen 4% to $41.75 during the regular session.

APPLE CUTS 174

Apple is eliminating 174 sales and support jobs at its Elk Grove, Calif., facility and transferring the work to a site in Austin. Apple said the laid-off workers will be given opportunities to relocate or apply for another Apple job in Elk Grove.

SMART Q3 GAINS FOR NDS

NDS Group, a unit of News Corp., said Thursday that its fiscal third-quarter net income rose 24% to $36.3 million and smart card deliveries rose to 10.6 million. Revenue increased 20% to $213.2 million.

LG JOINS USC TEAM

The Entertainment Technology Center at USC, a nonprofit that is part of USC's School of Cinematic Arts, has added LG Electronics as a sponsor. The nonprofit — which focuses on uniting entertainment, technology and consumer electronics — said LG will sponsor a showcase of products and serve on an advisory board.
