VINER HELPS OUT AT CANWEST

Peter Viner is the new president of Canwest Global Communications' broadcasting division, at least for now. The 25-year veteran of the Canadian broadcaster is coming out of retirement to take over as the company's interim president until a successor is found for Kathy Dore, who departs in December.

BBC BATTLES

BBC bosses came under fire from Parliament's Culture Media and Sport select committee Tuesday after admitting "serious editorial lapses" over the Russell Brand affair. BBC Trust chairman Michael Lyons and director general Mark Thompson were accused of being "out of touch" with audiences over the scale of fees paid to top talent. They also were forced to concede that the BBC's editorial standards had failed at a senior level.

WBTV UPS ZUCKER

Warner Bros. Television has promoted Jody Zucker to head the company's legal affairs department as senior vp and general counsel. Zucker will manage WBTV's legal department and its staff of attorneys and will supervise all facets of TV legal affairs.

WNET BUILDS

WNET-TV is building a production studio on the campus of Lincoln Center in New York that will open in the spring. It will produce programming for Thirteen, the nation's most-watched public TV station, and public station WLIW21.
