San Sebastian scene
The works of U.S. filmmaker Richard Brooks, a member of the "generation of violence," will be the subject of a retrospective during this year's San Sebastian Film Festival, organizers said. Brooks, who won a best screenplay Oscar for "Elmer Gantry" in 1960, started out penning thrillers during the 1940s, including "Brute Force" and "Key Largo." This year's festival runs Sept. 17-26.
Bruce Goldstein, repertory program director of New York's Film Forum and founder of Rialto Pictures, will receive the Mel Novikoff Award at the 52nd San Francisco International Film Festival, set for April 23-May 7.
