'Slumdog' slotted for China release

Oscar best picture winner "Slumdog Millionaire" has secured a slot as one of 20 major foreign movies China will import this year. Director Danny Boyle will attend the premiere in Beijing on Wednesday, with the film going into general release in at least 2,000 theaters nationwide the next day, said Zhang Hongyan, a publicist for the film's Hong Kong-based distributor Edko Film.

Jewison honor roll

The Canadian Film Centre and Film Independent will honor filmmaker and CFC founder Norman Jewison with a two-night tribute April 17-18 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on the occasion of the center's 20th anniversary. The event includes screenings of "In the Heat of the Night" on April 17 and "Fiddler on the Roof" on April 18.

'Hill' to top ReelWorld

"Gospel Hill," the directorial debut of Giancarlo Esposito, will open the ninth edition of the ReelWorld Film Festival on April 15, organizers said Wednesday. The U.S. indie, about a decades-old investigation into the death of a civil rights leader, stars Danny Glover and Angela Bassett.

Baer coming back

French comedian Edouard Baer will take the reins as emcee again at the 62nd annual Festival de Cannes. This year's edition runs May 13-24.
