MoMA, Hammer Museum Contenders Series to Include Screenings of 'Arrival,' 'Loving,' 'Nocturnal Animals' (Exclusive)

New York's Museum of Modern Art and Los Angeles' Hammer Museum on Thursday announced the lineup for their third annual bi-coastal showcase of awards hopefuls, The Contenders.
The series, which runs at MoMA from Nov. 10-Jan. 12 and at the Hammer Museum from Dec. 1-15, features recently released films that hope to be nominated for Oscars or other high-profile awards during the winter awards season or are simply destined to become cult classics. The screenings are followed by discussions with the filmmakers and actors.
The series opens at MoMA with a showing of Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, followed by a post-screening discussion with thw film's Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Other highlights of the MoMA lineup include documentaries I Am Not Your Negro and Weiner.
The Hammer Museum series starts with the unspooling of Loving, followed by a post-screening discussion with filmmaker Jeff Nichols and actor Joel Edgerton. Other Hammer Museum highlights include Nocturnal Animals and Lion.
"We are thrilled to announce a new season of The Contenders, and a lineup that heralds the year’s most acclaimed, audacious and praise-worthy films,” MoMA's chief film curator Rajendra Roy said in a statement. “Our series with the Hammer Museum is determined to break open the cloistered world of awards screenings which the public are rarely privy to, and give all audiences a chance to embrace these films alongside in-person conversations with the filmmakers and stars.”
Additional screenings for both venues will be announced.
Highlights of The Contenders at MoMA include:
Arrival (2016), with appearances by actress Amy Adams and actor Jeremy Renner;
I Am Not Your Negro (2016), with appearance by filmmaker Raoul Peck;
Aquarius (2016), with appearance by actress Sonia Braga; and
Weiner (2016), with appearances by filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elysa Steinberg.
Highlights of The Contenders at Hammer Museum include:
Loving (2016), with appearances by filmmaker Jeff Nichols and actor Joel Edgerton;
Nocturnal Animals (2016), with appearance by filmmaker Tom Ford;
Manchester by the Sea (2016), with appearance by filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan; and
Lion (2016), with appearance by actor Dev Patel.
