Lou Adler, Michelle Phillips to Introduce Anniversary Screening of 'Monterey Pop'

The three-day musical marathon in Monterey, Calif., was preserved in D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary Monterey Pop, which will get an anniversary screening June 17 at the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles. Lou Adler, the concert’s promoter, and Michelle Phillips, the last surviving member of The Mamas and The Papas, who closed the festival June 18, 1967, will be introduce the film and stick around for a Q&A afterward.

The concert featured a number of performances that have become legendary: Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire and kneeling over it while imploring the flames to climb higher; Janis Joplin in her breakout performance fronting Big Brother and the Holding Company; Otis Redding, whose performance backed by Booker T. and The M.G.’s helped him cross over from his R&B audience and enter the pop spotlight (he would die in a plane crash six months later); Keith Moon and The Who destroying their instruments after a typically wild show. All were captured for Pennebaker’s film, which was released in 1968.

Others among the nearly three dozens acts on the Monterey Pop bill that weekend were such future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers as The Grateful Dead, Simon and Garfunkel, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane and The Animals, along with Ravi Shankar, Lou Rawls and Hugh Masekela.
