More Makeup, More Money
Warner Bros.' Dark Shadows (May 11) has a lot going for it: Tim Burton directing, a vampire mythology and, most important, Johnny Depp, 48, in heavy makeup. Since Depp's mega-grossing turn in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the more foundation and mascara he wears -- from Capt. Jack Sparrow to the Mad Hatter to Willy Wonka -- the more audiences seem to line up for tickets. (The exception: Sweeney Todd, but that was a musical.) "He's a truly unique individual," says Warner Bros. distribution head Dan Fellman. "He has the ability to go from real to fantasy and yet is believable."
