MPA re-ups Asia anti-piracy push
'Operation Takedown' targets camcordingSINGAPORE -- The MPA launched an anti-piracy enforcement push Friday, targeting illegal camcording in cinemas throughout Asia.
"Operation Takedown" is planned to protect Hollywood's summer releases -- such as Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" -- from in-cinema recordings, the source of 90% of pirated movies worldwide, the MPA said. The MPA added that illegal camcording increased by 65% in the region in 2007.
Working with law enforcement in Australia, China, India and 10 other regional countries, the initiative will last through July 31 and also target illegal online film distribution.
The MPA said that its biannual initiatives have resulted in more than 5,000 arrests and the seizure of 32 million pirated optical discs over the past four years.
