MTV Movie Awards 2015: Shailene Woodley Calls for Community in Trailblazer Award Speech
Said presenter Miles Teller: "I've never been in a room with someone who emits more of a radiant, positive light. Shailene is an incredible force of nature."
The 2015 MTV Movie Awards honored Shailene Woodley with the Trailblazer Award on Sunday.
"It's not really about fame or fortune; she maintains the person that she is," said her Divergent and The Spectacular Now co-star Miles Teller, who spoke off-script when presenting her with the award. He recalled how they first met at a coffee shop "and she brought her own Mason jar of water, which she hiked to a spring several miles to get" and added that he had "never been in a room with someone who emits more of a radiant, positive light. Shailene is an incredible force of nature."
Onstage at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, Woodley told the audience about when she was at the awards show three years ago, when Emma Stone was being honored. "I remember what she said because it stayed with me all these years. … 'We meet thousands of people we'll be inspired by, but we'll never be anything other than ourselves.' In thinking about that and this whole concept of trailblazing, I realized that we can't fully be ourselves without a community. We can't be ourselves without people to reflect back who we really are."
"In that, I keep marveling at this idea of who we pick up along the trail along the way and who becomes our communities. … What am I trying to say? I just have no idea!"
She continued: "For all of you who have been pillars to me, thank you, and for all of you who I've been able to be a pillar for, I will continue to be a pillar for. Whoever your community is, be pillars for those people."
The actress then concluded with a laugh, "I was gonna say, 'Let's blaze on,' but I don't know if I can say that! So let's trailblaze on!"
