'Bridesmaids,' 'Hunger Games' Top MTV Movie Awards Nominations
The 21st edition features a makeshift "academy," voting on new categories such as "Best On-Screen Transformation" and "Best Gut-Wrenching Performance."
The dog-eat-dog worlds of bridal showers and future dystopias were big winners today as the MTV Movie Awards announced its 2012 nominations, bestowing Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games with eight each. By comparison, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 earned a disappointing two.

In the acting categories, Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Hutcherson, Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum are in the running for some bronzed-popcorn hardware, while the girls' list includes Jennifer Lawrence, Kristin Wiig, Emma Stone, Emma Watson and Rooney Mara.
Some of the more offbeat categories this year include "Best On-Screen Transformation" (nominees include Johnny Depp's 21 Jump Street cameo and Michelle Williams for her turn in My Week With Marilyn) and "Best Gut-Wrenching Performance" (the food-poisoned ladies of Bridesmaids were given a nod, as was Bryce Dallas Howard, who dug into Minny's "terrible awful" pie in The Help).
STORY: MTV Rebooting Movie Awards With 'Academy' Voting
The awards, scheduled to air their 21st edition on Sunday, June 3, have tweaked protocol this year: Winners will be chosen by an "academy" of actors, producers, agents and other industry types, in an attempt at adding some credibility to a ceremony often dismissed as a summer movie marketing tool.
