MTV Plays Will Smith "Fresh Prince" Video During Prince Tribute
DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's music video "Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble" aired at 2:55 p.m.
MTV accidentally paid tribute to two Hollywood royalty members during its wall-to-wall block of music videos that played in honor of Prince, who died Thursday at the age of 57.
Shortly following the death of the legendary R&B/pop singer-songwriter, the network changed its logo from yellow to the color purple and quickly swapped its previously scheduled content for "a dedicated block of his most influential music videos" and Purple Rain airings.
But as viewers watched Prince music videos — including "Kiss," "Let's Go Crazy," "Raspberry Beret" and "When Doves Cry" — play consecutively on the music-focused channel throughout the afternoon, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's (aka Will Smith) 1987 single "Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble" managed to air during the block of videos.
At 2:55 p.m. PST, the programming returned from a commercial break and played the rap duo's song, to which Twitter users quickly cited the mistake on the social media platform. "Lol mtv wrong prince," user @Lahlalindsey tweeted.
