MTV UK Orders Sixth Season of Reality Hit Show 'Geordie Shore'
LONDON - Reality series Geordie Shore, MTV UK’s highest-rated show ever, will return for its sixth season, which will be shot on location in Australia, the Viacom network said late Monday.
Production on the latest season of the U.K. equivalent of Jersey Shore will start in the spring, which is fall season in Australia. It will consist of eight 60-minute episodes that will air worldwide later this year.
In the U.K., the fifth season just started airing Tuesday. The fourth season regularly drew more than 1 million viewers.
That helped MTV UK hit its highest audience figures in five years in 2012. The network has said it is looking for a record performance in 2013.
Over the course of its four seasons, the show has grown its ratings by 80 percent in the demo of 16- to 34-year olds.
“Geordie Shore’s success is a testament to the cast, their interaction with their fans, our distinct production style and, of course, the Geordies’ hysterical antics,” said Kerry Taylor, senior vp and GM of Viacom International Media Networks UK, Australia & Eastern Europe. “With the backdrop of Australia as the setting for season six, I’m confident that viewers from the U.K., Australia and all over the world will continue to engage with Geordie Shore in record numbers.”
MTV last month also said that Geordie Shore was going global. "Based on the unprecedented multiseason success in the U.K. and initial launches on MTV in Australia, Southern Europe and mtv.com in the U.S., MTV is extending Geordie Shore to all the network’s regions," the network said then.
“Geordie Shore has proven to be a bona fide hit with Australian and New Zealand viewers, and we couldn’t be more excited to host them Down Under," said Rebecca Batties, vp and GM for music brands and comedy for VIMN Australia and New Zealand. "To get the Geordies on our shores is an amazing opportunity that is bound to take their connection with Australian fans to a whole new level.”
The show also has become a social media phenomenon in the U.K. Geordie Shore was the third-most-social TV brand on Twitter in the U.K. in 2012, according to MTV. Trending worldwide on Twitter every week during new episodes, the cast and show social media accounts collectively have more than 7 million followers.
