MTV U.K. to Produce Local Version of Hit Show 'Teen Mom'
"We turned 'Jersey Shore' into 'Geordie Shore' and smashed ratings records in the process," says the channel's managing director. "We’ll use this expertise to give 'Teen Mom' a fresh lease of life."
The show that introduced the world to Farrah Abraham is getting a U.K. makeover.
MTV UK said on Thursday that it would produce a local version of U.S. hit show Teen Mom.
Inspired by the MTV U.S. series, Teen Mom UK will be produced by True North and feature an entirely British cast. The series is scheduled for eight hourlong episodes and will air on MTV UK in the fall.
The U.S. original premiered in 2009 as a spinoff of 16 and Pregnant and became an audience favorite on MTV networks worldwide. In the U.K., 12 seasons have aired since March 2010. The series is among MTV UK's top-performing shows, reaching 4.7 million viewers aged 16-34 and 12.2 million overall viewers across all airings, according to the network.
"The U.K. version of the show will have the same core value of authenticity as the original and will follow a cast of teenage girls juggling their emotional teenage years with becoming a parent for the first time," MTV UK said.
Said Jill Offman, managing director, MTV UK: "MTV UK has a great track record of re-versioning hit shows from our sister channel in the U.S. — we turned Jersey Shore into Geordie Shore and smashed ratings records in the process. We’ll use this expertise to give Teen Mom a fresh lease of life, combined with a unique British twist, which we’re confident will have massive appeal to local audiences."
In 2015, MTV UK reached its highest audience share in 10 years in the demo of 16-34 year-olds.
