MTV VMAs: Foo Fighters Follow Up 'Best Rock Video' Win With Raunchiest Clip Yet (NSFW Video)

The last time Foo Fighters won an MTV Video Music Award, it was in 1996, when “Big Me” was named Best Group Video and when MTV still played them. Some 11 years later, they were finally back at the VMA podium (sans drummer Taylor Hawkins, who was on vacation with his family), accepting the moonman on Sunday for the Falling Down-inspired “Walk” as Best Rock Video.

Dave Grohl joked earlier in the night that, thanks to Tony Bennett, he didn’t feel like the red carpet elder anymore, but with 16 nominations under his band’s collective belt, and two more appearances in the Nirvana era, the Foos frontman could certainly be considered a veteran.

So of all his VMA experiences, which memories stand out? “Woah, so many,” Grohl told The Hollywood Reporter. “[In] 1992, Nirvana almost got into a fist fight with the Guns N Roses guys -- that was memorable; 1994 was really sad because we had to accept an award for Kurt [Cobain]; 1996 was rad because we got one for 'Big Me;' 1997 was weird because that was when Pat [Smear] quit the band on MTV...” And who could forget ten years after in Las Vegas, where beer bongs, a fantasy suite and Motorhead ruled the night at the Palms casino. “There's too many,” added Grohl. “We've been here quite a few times.”

The Foos were up against the Black Keys’ “Howlin’ for You,” Cage the Elephant’s “Shake Me Down,” Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” and Mumford and Sons’ “The Cave” for Best Rock Video, and the band made sure to pay respect to the genre and the people who put them there.

Said Grohl: “Never lose faith in real rock and roll music... You might have to look a little harder, but it's always going to be there.” He then dedicated the win to Judy McGrath, the recently deposed MTV Networks chairman and CEO, who had long championed the band and all their kooky antics, especially the recurring theme of dressing in drag or as cartoonish characters.
