'Museum' revists top spot overseas

Despite a miniwave of big studio films breaking internationally on limited rollouts, 20th Century Fox International's "Night at the Museum" remains the No. 1 overseas title for the third consecutive weekend.

The Ben Stiller comedy grossed an estimated $19.1 million at about 5,000 screens in 34 territories.

"Museum" dropped some $10 million from last weekend overall, but bowed No. 1 in Brazil where it roared to an estimated $3 million from 502 screens, making it the third-highest Fox film ever to play the market. So far, "Museum has grossed $150.4 million overseas, $336.2 million worldwide.

Action in holdover markets was strong for "Museum." In Germany, it bested the debut of local-language comedy, "My Fuhrer: The Truly Truest Truth About Adolph Hitler," to take the No. 1 spot, garnering an estimated $2.6 million in its third weekend at 852 screens, for a market cume to date of $17.5 million.

It its third weekend in Australia, "Museum" drew an estimated $1.7 million from 349 screens, for a market cume of $13.5 million. In Mexico, the comedy starring Ben Stiller landed No. 2 in its third weekend, eliciting an estimated $1.5 million from 743 locations for a market total to date of $15.4 million.

It finished No. 2 in the U.K. with $3.9 million on the weekend at 470 sites, for a market total of $32.9 million. In Korea, "Museum" is on track to become the second highest-grossing Fox film ever to be released in the market. The fourth weekend tally there was an estimated $1.3 million from 254 screens for a local cume of $22.7 million.

Bolstered by nine British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations, Sony Pictures Releasing International's "Casino Royale" had a No. 2 overall weekend, grossing an estimated $11.3 million from 4,235 screens in 57 markets, lifting its international gross total to $390.7 million.

The James Bond adventure's two biggest markets were Italy (an estimated $2.6 million from 427 locations in the second weekend, No. 3 in the market where it has so far grossed $7.9 million) and in the U.K. ($1.8 million in the ninth weekend from 325 sites, ranking No. 5 and pushing its market gross total to $101.6 million).

Ranking third this weekend is "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Sony opened in just two overseas markets -- in the U.K. where ranked No. 1 with an estimated $5 million from 413 screens; and in Australia, where it nabbed an estimated $2.7 million from 223 sites.

The Will Smith feel-good comedy-drama also nabbed an estimated $3 million in its opening weekend in Italy, where it is being released by another distributor. As a result, "Happyness" grossed an estimated $10.8 million in total this weekend. That lifts its worldwide boxoffice gross to $144.5 million.

In fourth spot this weekend is Fox's "Eragon," which drew an estimated $10.3 million from about 7,000 screens in 56 territories, elevating its overseas gross total to $154 million. The fantasy adventure bowed strongly in South Korea (an estimated $2.8 million from 302 screens) and in the Philippines, where it ranked No. 1 with an estimated $549,000 from 118 sites.

Ranking fifth this weekend is Fox's release of MGM's "Rocky Balboa," which charged into six foreign markets for an estimated $9.5 million from 1,156 screens. The Sylvester Stallone film bowed No. 1 in three of its opening markets: in Italy (an estimated $4 million from 370 spots), Mexico ($1.6 million from 369 screens) and in Spain ($3.4 million from 300 locations).

Universal International opened "Smokin' Aces," director Joe Carnahan's crime-action drama -- toplining Jeremy Piven, Ben Affleck, Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds and Andy Garcia -- in the U.K. despite the fact that it's U.S. bow isn't until Jan. 26.

Weekend estimate came in at $2 million from 338 screens, or a $5,917 per-screen average. It looks to claim the No. 3 spot in this market behind Sony's "The Pursuit of Happyness" and Fox's "Museum."

The co-production presence of notable British production concern, Working Title Films, was a factor in early U.K. opening. "Smokin's" international rollout picks up steam over the next three months.

Fox bowed director Kevin Macdonald's "The Last King of Scotland" -- starring Forest Whitaker as the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada, as seen by his personal physician -- in the U.K. for a solid opening-weekend estimate of $1.7 million from 246 screens, enough to rank No. 6 in this key market.

Fox also introduced "Pathfinder," director Marcus Nispel's fantasy-action-adventure, in four markets for an estimated $1.9 million from 441 screens. The Phoenix Pictures-Vinland Production Canada co-production ranked No. 1 in Russia (an estimated $1.5 million from 300 locations) and in Malaysia ($182,000 from 30 sites).

UI's "The Holiday" crossed yesterday the $100-million mark internationally. The Nancy Meyer romantic comedy, with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, yielded an estimated $7.8 million this weekend from 2,860 screens in 45 markets. Overseas total gross stands at $103.2 million over 40 days.

Biggest of its two openings was Mexico where "Holiday" bowed in the No. 4 spot, garnering an estimated $800,000 from 237 locations. The comedy ranks No. 3 in France, No. 2 after five weeks in Austria, No. 5 in Australia, No. 11 in the U.K., and No. 4 in Germany, its biggest holdover territory where it grossed an estimated $1.3 million from 526 sites for a 32-day market cume of $13.9 million.

Buena Vista International's "Deja Vu," with Denzel Washington, bowed strongly in Korea with an estimated $1.8 million from 200 locations, for a hefty per-screen average of $9,000. Overall weekend take was an estimated $7.3 million from 3,150 screens in 36 territories, hoisting "Deja Vu's" overseas cume to $81.5 million -- $19 million more than the film has grossed domestically.

The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced actioner's biggest holdover market remains Germany, where it ranked No. 3 in the market over the weekend with an estimated $1.3 million at 623 screens, for a market cume of $7 million. In Argentina, it finished No. 1 for the second weekend in a row with an estimated $250,000 from 52 situations for an 11-day market total of $850,000.

Next weekend, "Deja vu" opens in Australia, Brazil and the Philippines.

Warner Bros. International's "Happy Feet" grossed an estimated $6.6 million this weekend from about 4,600 prints in 54 markets. Biggest of the holdover markets was Australia, where the animation title about singing and dancing penguins nabbed in its third weekend an estimated $1.9 million from 400 situations. Total international gross thus far stands at $151.7 million.

Two other animation titles from Paramount Pictures International, "Flushed Away" and "Charlotte's Web," continued to pump along nicely. "Flushed" grossed an estimated $4 million from 3,552 screens in 56 markets, pushing its overseas gross total to $100 million. "Web" yielded an estimated $2.3 million from 1,761 sites in 18 markets, hiking its international cume to $20 million.

WBI's "Blood Diamond," with Leonardo DiCaprio, drew an estimated $3.3 million in its second weekend of overseas release at 529 screens in seven markets, raising its overseas total to $8.8 million. Same distrib's "The Departed," the Martin Scorsese crime drama, passed the $127 million overseas gross mark with an estimated $2.3 million this weekend from 2,600 screens in 33 markets. WBI's "The Prestige" has garnered a total of $41 million internationally with an estimated $4 million this weekend in 31markets.

Still No. 1 in its sixth weekend in Japan is Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language "Letters From Iwo Jima," which tallied an estimated $1.3 million this weekend from 322 sites, hoisting its Japan market total to $33.5 million.

Other cume updates: Sony's "Open Season," $101.6 million; PPI's "Babel," $15 million; Lionsgate's "Saw III," $64 million; Sony's "Monster House," $62.9 million; Lionsgate's "Employee of the Month," $4 million; and UI's "Children of Men," $32.5 million.
