'Museum' shelf life is on display
Empty20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's "Night at the Museum" remained the top- renting DVD in the country for the third consecutive week, while Universal Studios' romantic comedy "Because I Said So" took the top spot on the national DVD sales chart in its first week in stores.
The week ending May 13 was a slow one in video land, with just three new theatrical releases, all romantic comedies, coming to disc.
Warner Home Video's "Music and Lyrics," with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, was the top-grossing release, with a $50.6 million theatrical pedigree. Even so, it debuted at No. 2 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and No. 5 on Home Media Magazine's rental chart, a notch below "Because," which grossed $42.7 million.
The third new theatrical, Sony Pictures' "Catch and Release," bowed at No. 5 on the sales chart and No. 7 on the rental chart after generating $15.5 million in a brief theatrical run.
The previous week's top seller, Paramount's "Dreamgirls," slipped to No. 3 on First Alert.
On the high-def disc front, 62% of the discs purchased by consumers for the week ending May 13 were Blu-ray Disc, while 38% were HD-DVD. Warner's "Planet Earth: The Complete Collection" was the top seller on all three HD disc charts: Blu-ray, HD-DVD and blended. "Because" was one of the few new Universal releases to come out only on DVD and not in HD-DVD.
