NATPE/Content First Seller Registration Up 31 Percent So Far
In an optimistic report, new CEO Rod Perth says they will celebrate the 50th anniversary with more attendees, more exhibitors and a growing line up of speakers and participants.
NATPE/Content First’s new CEO Rod Perth provided an optimistic update Wednesday on plans for the 50h anniversary conference and market in Miami Beach, taking place Jan. 28-30, 2013. Compared to the same time last year, buyer registration is up 32 percent, the exhibition floor space is almost sold out (with about 300 sellers signed up so far, of whom 27 are first-timers) and press registration is up about 28 percent over last year.
“Our hearts are in this,” said Perth. “It’s our 50th. It’s a big deal. But we’re not sitting still. We want to be a trusted facilitator that brings all the components together.”
Perth announced that they have already committed to return to Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau Hotel for the 2014 event and are in discussions about extending their run at the location for an even longer period.
In addition to the opening keynote by Mark Cuban, other speakers will include Stephen Lambert of Studio Lambert, who will give the international keynote; Jonathan Mildenhall of Coca-Cola Company; Lance Podell of YouTube, who will speak about investments and innovations; and Tony Pace of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund, whose topic will be "The Art of the Deal."
Among those who will speak on panels or in one-on-one discussions will be Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development), Peter Casey (Frasier, Wings), Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), Electus CEO Ben Silverman, Charlie Corwin (Ink Master), John Sykes of Clear Channel, Larry King and Brian Seth Hurst of Opportunity Management.
Reviving the tradition of parties for attendees, the first night of NATPE will have an event at the nearby Eden Roc Hotel sponsored by DLA (Digital Latin America) and Venevision International and the second night (after the Tartikoff Awards) will feature a 50th anniversary party at a nightclub in the Fontainebleau.
All of the Hollywood studios, including Sony Pictures Television, will have a presence at NATPE for the first time in years. Among the new talk show hosts on hand will be Arsenio Hall, Queen Latifah and Bethenny Frankel.
But NATPE is no longer just about domestic TV syndication, which was the driver for the show for many years. It is still a component, noted Perth, but the growth has been in international attendance and in digital content.
Next year Perth expects to expand into electronics as well. NATPE has an agreement with International CES under which they will exhibit at each other’s event; and by next year Perth expects them to help exhibit a lot of “cool new electronics.”
Perth also spoke about the conflict in dates with Real Screen, which is taking place almost simultaneously in Washington, D.C. He said both groups tried to shift dates but were unable to do so. However they have agreed to have a live video link at both events so attendees can speak with colleagues and others from each show.
Herbert G. Kloiber, chairman of Tele München Group, who is a Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award winner, will also headline the Global Navigators track.
