NBC connects DotComedy
Takes late-night, sitcoms digitalNBC Universal has opened up its rich comedy heritage to those on the Web.
The studio on Thursday took live its new comedy broadband channel DotComedy, which will feature content from NBC's late-night shows including the first 10 years of "Late Night With David Letterman" and "Saturday Night Live" as well as original Web-exclusive material and user-generated content.
"The launch of this new digital brand is an important milestone for us," said Jeff Gaspin, president of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, digital content and cross-network strategy, who made the announcement. "NBC Universal has built a great history of comedy from late-night to 'must-see TV.' DotComedy is a digital extension in the same tradition."
Gaspin called the comedy genre the most successful one on the Web and said that it will appeal to advertisers' target demographics.
Besides its host of late-night programming, which also includes "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," sitcom material will be mined from the NBC Universal television library for the site as well. That content includes the Emmy-winning HBO original series "Dream On" and other classic series "Leave It to Beaver" and "The Munsters."
Exclusive and original series slated to roll out by year's end include "Untitled Comedy News Show," a news series parody hosted by Brian Unger; "Hot Tub in Space," chronicling the adventures of four boys traversing the galaxy; and "Playback," a biweekly series in which musical comedians Stuckey & Murray take a satirical look at current events and pop culture through original songs. The performers appear regularly at New York venues.
Original pilots and shorts also will be introduced in the coming year.
