Digital shift reflected in Canadian sales chief's new role

TORONTO -- As the lines between Canadian TV and new media continue to blur, NBC Universal has promoted longtime Canadian sales chief Ron Suter to exec vp and GM Canada at NBC Universal Television Distribution.

After decades in which U.S. primetime series were largely sold to Canadian broadcasters at May's Los Angeles Screenings, Suter and his sales team are increasingly licensing NBC Universal programming year-round to broadcasters here, often for a growing range of emerging digital platforms and technologies.

"Distribution has become ever more complex, not only in the Canadian market. We're dealing with more and more windows and having to manage them," Suter said.

Suter, who began his career in 1981 with the records division of MCA in Toronto before leaving to head NBC's Canadian TV sales effort, also is being upped to exec vp Universal Studios Canada. His promotion was announced by Barry Wallach, president of NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution.
