NBC's 'Chuck,' ABC's 'Samantha' start strong

NEW YORK -- NBC's freshman "Chuck" bucked a download trend for new shows, jumping 19% week-to-week while ABC's "Samantha Who" debuted strongly out of "Dancing with the Stars."

The Christina Applegate sitcom averaged 14.9 million viewers and a 4.5 rating/12 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. It held a lot of the demo from a 90-minute "Dancing with the Stars" (19.2 million, 4.6/12), and settled into second place at 9:30 p.m. in the demo. and first place among viewers.

"Chuck" (8.2 million, 3.2/8) began to show some ratings promise with a 19% increase compared to last week (2.7/7). CBS's "Big Bang Theory" (8.1 million, 3.2/8) dropped slightly from last week, as did "How I Met Your Mother" (7.9 million, 3.1/9). But both "Two and a Half Men" (13.8 million, 4.8/11) and "Rules of Engagement" (11 million, 4.0/9) were up.

NBC's "Heroes" (11.2 million, 5.0/12) was unchanged from last week at the lowest ever for an original episode, although it was still enough to win the night in adults 18-49.



CBS came back to win at 10 p.m. with "CSI: Miami" (15.4 million, 4.7/12), which was up week-to-week as was ABC's "The Bachelor" (9.3 million, 3.5/9). NBC's "Journeyman" (7 million, 2.9/7) remained the same but hasn't shown improvement.

Fox averaged 9.6 million viewers and a 2.9/7 in adults 18-49 with the third game of Red Sox-Indians playoff game, although that likely would increase with the final ratings when they are released later today.

ABC (15.2 million, 4.2/10) led Monday's primetime followed by CBS (11.9 million, 4.1/10); NBC (8.8 million, 3.7/9); Fox (9.6 million, 2.9/7); and The CW (2.5 million, 1.0/2).
