Netflix Snags French Series 'Spiral'

Netflix will put on its best French accent to air its first subtitled, non English-language series Spiral. The hit French crime drama will air in French with English subtitles.

Created by Alexandra Clert and Guy-Patrick Sainderichin and produced by Son et Lumiere, international sales for Spiral are being handled by Newen Distribution.

Spiral first aired on pay TV powerhouse Canal Plus in 2005 and the show’s fourth season will premiere in September on the network. The non-exclusive deal encompasses all four seasons of the show that is called Engrenages in France.

The police drama focuses on the action-packed days of a tough female captain, her two lieutenants, a judge, a prosecutor and a lawyer as they investigate murder cases and target corruption. The show stars Caroline Proust, Philippe Duclos, Thierry Godard, Fred Bianconi, Audrey Fleurot and Gregory Fitoussi, who will also appear in the upcoming Jeremy Piven drama Mr. Selfridge.

BBC Worldwide Productions has snagged the remake rights for the series and Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Productions plans to develop the show that will be written by Cold Case scribe Meredith Stiehm.

Spiral has been a ratings success in France for Canal Plus and has been licensed to 72 networks worldwide including both free-to-air and pay TV channels.

It airs on BBC4 in the UK and in Australia on SBS2.
