Netflix hit by major system outage

Company will provide credits to affected subscribers

One-third of Netflix's 8.4 million users have not been receiving DVDs since Tuesday because of a prolonged shipment system outage, the worst in the company's history.

A Netflix spokesman said Thursday that he couldn't predict when normal service would be restored.

After a down day Tuesday, about half of Netflix's 55 shipping centers were functional Wednesday, but a relapse of the system's problems stopped shipments again Thursday.

"We don't have a root cause," the spokesman said. Affected subscribers will get credits, details for which have to be worked out, he said.

The online DVD rental pioneer encountered another technical glitch in March, but shipments then weren't affected for as long.

Some users received e-mails about the latest outage.

"Our goal is to ship DVDs as soon as possible and to provide a personalized e-mail update to you if your DVD shipment was delayed," Netflix said on its Web site.
