The strategy is a departure from the all-at-once approach the streaming service typically takes but is tied to the series being released simultaneously on Canada's City network.

Netflix has set a May 21 premiere date for its Jennette McCurdy drama Between. But don't expect to be able to binge-watch the survivalist thriller in which the former star of Nickelodeon's Sam & Cat plays a pregnant teen.

Netflix will instead unveil a new episode each week as the streamer goes day-and-date with Canada's City network, which has the worldwide first-window rights to the Canadian drama.

City will debut Between — which centers on a town beset by a plague that kills everyone over 21 — in Canada at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, with Netflix releasing the episode at 9 p.m. stateside and in the rest of its territories. That approach differs from Netflix's typical all-at-once release plan, which will apply to its other summer 2015 fare, including the third season of Orange Is the New Black, premiering June 12.

On Monday morning McCurdy teased the launch of Between by releasing the first clip of the drama on her Twitter account. The six-parter will launch with a Jon Cassar-directed premiere episode, "School's Out," in which the mysterious virus begins to kill off adults in the small town of Pretty Lake.

Among those left alive and scrambling to survive is a pregnant Wiley Day (McCurdy), who has a plan to give up her baby and leave Pretty Lake behind. But when the government puts the town under quarantine, Wiley and best friend Adam, played by Jesse Carere, realize discovering the cause of the virus is their only avenue to freedom.

Netflix ordered Between, which is also directed by series creator Michael McGowan, as its first original Canadian production.

The drama is produced by Don Carmody and McGowan's Mulmur Feed Co. in association with Elevation Pictures Corp. Between is executive produced by David Cormican, Naveen Prasad, Carmody and McGowan.

Elevation Pictures will handle worldwide distribution for the series.
